Pre-requisites: General Biology and Organic Chemistry

Format: Two lectures 1hr. 20 mins - Food Science Auditorium and a laboratory class (two concurrent periods once per week) - Attendance in the laboratory is mandatory.

Description: This is an introductory microbiology class that fulfills the biology, bitotechnology and microbiology requirements of a SEBS Major, and also pre-med and pre-vet class requirements.

Introduction (Historical/Methodology/ the microscope and Gram stain; The Microbes full taxonomy; the microbial cell; microbial nutrition & growth; physiology (energetics; biosynthesis of macromolecules - DNA, RNA, protein); viruses; bacterial genetics; ecology - agriculture and the environment; food microbiology; industrial microbiology; humans and microbes - prevention of disease; portals of entry of pathogens.

Laboratory grades (25%) will be assessed on a range of written reports, quzzes, and a practical exam.
