New Jersey's agricultural and urban environments are critically important to the state's economy and welfare. The delicate balance between these two environments gives rise to special problems, such as how to sustain intensive crop and livestock production in increasingly developing areas, how to reduce the chemical burdens on farms and urban lands, and how to use biological processes to clean up toxic wastes.
The Biotechnology Center for Agriculture and the Environment (Biotech), dedicated to molecular research in agricultural and environmental sciences, is helping New Jersey to address these concerns. Biotech was created in 1987 at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, jointly by the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology and by the university. Located on the Cook College campus, the center is an integral part of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES).
Research at Biotech focuses on fundamental problems of state, regional, and national practical significance. Such research is a mandate for which Rutgers, a land-grant university, is well suited. The center benefits from the input of a Science Advisory Board, with broad representation from the scientific, industrial, and agricultural communities.
Funding for the center is provided by the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology and by Rutgers. Additional support is received from federal, state, industry, and foundation sources.
