Technology Transfer
·
New Jersey companies and others take an active
interest in Biotech Center research and training programs.
Biotech Center faculty interact with more than 40 companies annually
through sponsored research, site visits and seminars, technical consulting, and
shortcourses.
·
Two start-up companies have been spun off from
research discoveries in Dr. Raskin’s laboratory--Phytotech (now part of
Edenspace, Inc.) and Phytomedics, Inc.
·
Companies currently licensing patented
technology include Dupont, ForBio America, the Hughes Institute, Merck,
Phytomedics, and Pioneer Hi-Bred.
·
New Jersey companies collaborated with the
Biotech Center to develop a High Throughput Screening Facility to train students
in robotic screening and genomic analysis. The Facility also services the needs of small biotech
companies.
·
Corporate members of the Biotech Center’s
Science Advisory Board include representatives from BASF, Bristol-Myers Squibb,
Hercules, Johnson & Johnson, and FMC.
·
The Biotech Center provides field trial
facilities in South Jersey for genetically modified crops.
The first such trial in New Jersey was successfully conducted there in
1992, and projects were reviewed by a Citizens’ Advisory Committee organized
by the Center. A public-sector
facility with good community relations for field-testing genetically transformed
organisms is an important asset to New Jersey companies.
