EDUCATION           

M.S. student, 2000 – present, Bioresource Engineering (Employee Degree Program), Rutgers University.

Research focus is on quantifying the performance of a floor heating system for greenhouse plant production. The goal is to determine the heat transfer coefficient of the floor so the heat contribution from the floor to the greenhouse environment can be calculated under different temperature regimes. In addition, the time constant of the floor heating system will be determined, and finally, a control strategy will be proposed for employing floor heating systems for greenhouse crop production.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, construct, and implement all data collection including instrumentation, calibration/installation of sensors, and evaluation/presentation of data collected at the Bioresource Engineering Greenhouses, including the Open-Roof Greenhouse.
  • Maintain all existing data acquisition and control equipment and install new systems as required at the Bioresource Engineering Greenhouses.
  • Supervise undergraduate students hired to help with above responsibilities.
  • Help prepare presentations and publications for outreach efforts and make occasional presentations on our ongoing research.      

RESEARCH PROJECTS

January 2000 - present, Rutgers University

Evaluating and quantifying the performance of the Open-Roof Greenhouse and its environment control systems, including a heated ebb and flood floor irrigation system, an additional overhead heating system, and the ventilation system.

September 2001 - present, Rutgers University

Determining the light transmission through a double layer of a new glazing material (EthyleneTetraFluoroEthylene Copolymer), manufactured by the Japanese ASAHI Glass Company. This new film material is simultaneously being compared with conventional polyethylene greenhouse film. 

Summer 2001, Rutgers University

Installed a new environment control system for the Bioresource Engineering Greenhouses located behind the Extension Conference Center.

Spring 2001 and 2002, Kube Pak Corporation, Allentown, NJ

Cooperated with Dr. Paul Fisher (University of New Hampshire) in evaluating the use of supplemental lighting for plug production.

June 1999 - August 1999, Johnson Space Center, Houston, TX 

Designed and built a Single Lamp Test Stand with all mechanical systems, hardware, instrumentation, and data collection equipment necessary to fully characterize different types of both water cooled and bare high pressure sodium lamps in terms of radiation output, three dimensional light output, and heat removed under various conditions.

Fall 1999, Rutgers University

Participated in the design of four, one cubic meter plant growth chambers, to be used to develop plant growth models for different temperature, light, and nutrient regimes.
