Setting up Secure Services for the Mail Application
Version 1.2.3 on Mac OS X 10.2
.
-
Start the Mail program, located in the Applications folder. There is a shortcut in the dock like this:
-
Pull down the "Mail" menu to "Preferences..."

This will open the Preferences window in the Accounts category.
-
To add a new account, click the '+' to proceed. If you are editing your existing AESOP connection, select the account name listed under "Description" and click on "Edit".
This will open the Add/Edit account window.

Choose either POP3 (default) or IMAP. POP3 downloads the messages to your PC and deletes them from the server. This is the standard configuration for users with one PC in one office. If you have a reason to want to keep messages on the server, for instance if you have multiple offices and check mail from multiple computers, you may want to choose IMAP. Consult your local computer support personnel for details. Click CONTINUE to move to the next screen -
POP3 users should enter pop.aesop.rutgers.edu
IMAP users should enter imap.aesop.rutgers.edu
Enter your AESOP username and password in the fields below.
Click CONTINUE to move to the next screen.
-
Check the box for SSL and click CONTINUE to move to the next screen.
-
Change the outgoing mail server to mail.aesop.rutgers.edu
If you are located off-campus, you can use your local outgoing server if you so desire. Enter your choice below, and click the USE AUTHENTICATION box and reenter your AESOP username and password. Click CONTINUE to move to the next screen.
-
Check USE SECURE SOCKETS LAYER (SSL) and set the AUTHENTICATION method to PASSWORD. Click CONTINUE to move to the next page.

-
Check settings to confirm they are correct and press CONTINUE to move on to next page.
-
Click DONE.
-
You will be returned to this screen. Click the SERVER SETTINGS button.

-
Change SERVER PORT to 587 and click OK.

-
You will once again be returned to this screen. Click the ADVANCED tab. Set the IMAP PATH PREFIX to INBOX if you are using IMAP. Set PORT to 995 for POP3, or 993 for IMAP, and make sure the USE SSL box is checked. When done, close this window and click on YES to save changes.
-
You should now be ready to read and send email using Mac Mail. If you have any problems, contact your local computer support personnel, or Karl Lindauer (klindauer@aesop.rutgers.edu, 848/932-4116)
